In Boey Kim Chengs poem to Wordsworth, he begins by saying in the first line, You should be here, character has need of you. Then in the next few lines he describes nearly of the environmental problems in our contemporary world, like pollution, smog, flowers that cannot function, few birds and a sky that is shadowy moving. Then he speaks about Proteus. He says only hope for Proteus--the God of the sea-- rising is dead. He room all in all hope for the sea (the unhealthy and contaminated oceans) is gone. He says this is because of mans unsatisfiable greed, he actually says, insatiate man. He says at the end of the poem, poetry and piety fail He means: poetry fails to awaken and save worldkind and religion alike fails. This poem is very gloomy. It paints a grim picture of human beings as the cause of the ruination of character. The fact that he says You should be here.. is sort of hopeful, in that, perhaps the poet feels that Wordsworth could have a dictatorial effect on this ruined natural world. The fact that he en entitles his poem Report to Wordsworth is significant in that, he is situating himself in a long line of Romantic poets who elevate nature above man made inventions.




In Report to Wordsworth, Boey Kim Cheng uses a wide verity of vivid imagery, sounds, and even Wordsworth himself to melancholically signify Natures suffering at the hands of Man.
When you first assume the poem it reveals the agony Cheng feels for Natures suffering, which in playing period has become his own. This is demonstrated in the poets choice of title; the word report is normally associated with science and proven facts. This suggests that the verse is based on the things that are really happening to the environment. Cheng has chosen to Report to Wordsworth because he was a very famous romanticist poet who was renowned for his love and worship of Nature
