Imperialism is depicted in its most natural state in Joseph Conrads book Heart of Darkness. It allows the readers to get an inside port to the horrors of imperialism. In Heart of Darkness Marlow is a sailor who journeys up the Congo to meet Kurtz, who is said to have great abilities. He takes a job as a riverboat captain with the play along, who wants to merchandise in Congo. The inbred Africans of the region have been forced to work for the Company and they birth from overwork and illness due to the abusive and careless Company agents. The scenes of torture, cruelty and slave like treatment show the original harshness of imperialism. The Company try to justify what they are doing as trade and that the way they treat Africans is a part of civilization.

Kurtz tells Marlow that he does not trade, but takes ivory by force, and when he describes the way he treats the natives he uses words like extermination and suppression.
