Traditionally, run readiness/ action index studies are conducted to assess a process relative to specification criteria. Statisticians often challenge how well commonly used capability indices do this. I will pass over some of these very important issues within this chapter and suggest procedures to dominate these deficiencies. However, the fact remains that customers often request these indices when communicating with their suppliers. A customer might set process capability/ doing indices targets and then ask suppliers to report on how well they get through these targets.
The equations for process capability/performance indices discussed in this chapter are rather simple but are very sensitive to the excitant value for standard deviation (σ). Unfortunately, there can be differences of opinion on how to determine standard deviation in a given situation. This chapter will discuss some of these alternatives and their differences.
The equations presented in this chapter apply to normally distributed data. Computer programs can often train data not originating from a normally distributed population.
